Copenhagen Guide

Founded in 1843, Tivoli Gardens is the third-oldest operating amusement park in the world, following Dyrehavsbakken in nearby Klampenborg, Denmark, and Wurstelprater in Vienna, Austria. Fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen was a frequent visitor, and Walt Disney even found inspiration for his own Disney World here. Tivoli Gardens is conveniently located next to the Central Station and within walking distance of City Hall.

The Church of Our Saviour is one of Denmark’s most renowned landmarks. Since the serpentine spire was inaugurated in 1752, climbing all 400 steps to the top has become a popular activity. The final 150 steps are external, offering an unparalleled view of Copenhagen from every angle at a height of 86 meters.

Design Museum Denmark showcases a diverse array of decorative art, crafts, and industrial designs spanning from the late Middle Ages to the present day, encompassing both Western and Asian influences. Formerly the Royal Frederik’s Hospital, the museum holds a rich history as the first public hospital in Denmark. Notably, it was here that the renowned philosopher Søren Kierkegaard was admitted and later passed away in 1855.

Rosenborg Castle, located in the center of Copenhagen, was built in the 17th century by the renowned Danish king Christian IV and showcases 400 years of royal treasures, including the Crown Jewels and Royal Regalia.

ARKEN is an art gallery with maritime-inspired architecture located by the sea in Ishøj, south of Copenhagen. Its diverse collection comprises over 400 works by Danish, Nordic, and international contemporary artists, primarily from the period after 1990. Among its treasures are one of Europe’s most significant collections of works by the British artist Damian Hirst, tapestries by Grayson Perry, and a masterpiece sculpture by Ai WeiWei.

Cisternerne (The Cisterns), once served as the water reservoirs for Copenhagen. Situated beneath the verdant grounds of Søndermarken park, opposite Frederiksberg Castle in Frederiksberg, these massive underground chambers once held 16 million liters of drinking water, shielded from natural light. Today, this dark, cold, and damp underground world, reminiscent of cathedrals and somber catacombs, has been transformed into Copenhagen’s most vibrant and dynamic contemporary art venue.

The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde proudly displays the five original ship finds dating back to the Viking Age, known as the Skuldelev Ships, alongside a fleet of meticulously crafted sailing reconstructions. The Round Tower is a 17th Century tower located on one of the city center’s busy shopping streets. Built by King Christian IV as an astronomical observatory, it is noted for its equestrian staircase and its views over Copenhagen.
